How to use it

Enter numbers separated by spaces, semicolons or new lines. You can paste a column straight from Excel or Google Sheets.

Formula and method

Mean = sum of the values ÷ number of values. Median = middle value once the list is sorted (average of the two middle values if the count is even).

Worked example

Grades 12, 15, 9 and 18: sum = 54, mean = 54 ÷ 4 = 13.5, median = (12 + 15) ÷ 2 = 13.5.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean adds up all values; the median is the middle one. The median is less affected by extreme values, for example one very high salary.

How do I calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each value by its weight (coefficient), add the results and divide by the sum of the weights.
